In this article, we explore the top 8 things that can damage your tyres and cause premature ruination.

Inflation

Tyres need to be inflated just right. Over-inflation and underinflation can severely shorten the lifespan of a tyre and lead to early wear and tear.

If left unfixed, underinflation can cause a tyre to burst or blow, which is likely due to the lack of air or the general slow leak of air escaping.

Over-inflation, however, reduces the grip on the road, while also causing premature wear and tear and increases the bumpiness experienced on the road.

Speed

Speed can cause tyre damage from two main causes: overheating, and rapid destruction.

When cars go at a very high speed, tyres quickly heat up. The sudden heat can lead to a blowout, rapid air loss, and potentially an accident if the driver is unable to control the vehicle after the tyre blows.

If a car is going dangerously fast and it hits a pothole or the other road irregularity, the tyre is more likely to experience damage at a greater scale than if the car was going at a regular speed.

Overloading

As with speeding, overloading can cause tyres to rapidly heat up and blowout.

Unsealed Roads and Potholes

Driving on gravel and other unsealed roads can rapidly cause tyre damage, especially if the driver is going at a high speed.

Potholes are another road hazard that drivers are likely to come across and aim to avoid. Potholes damage rims and tyres and can even puncture your tyre should you go deep enough.

Kerbs and Common Obstacles

Running into a kerb, parking against a kerb, or generally interacting with a kerb can cause scratching, cutting and tearing, all of which can lead to a punctured or otherwise damaged tyre.

Misalignment

Shaking and unsteady vehicles are often said to be misaligned. Alignment of tires involves adjusting a vehicle’s suspension to keep the angle of the tires properly aligned with the road.

Wear and Tear

Every tyre will eventually show signs of wear and tear. However, it can be caused prematurely if the tyres are not well-looked after. Over and underinflation, driving on unsealed roads or rocky surfaces, and speeding are all ways that accelerate wear and tear and shorten the lifespan of a tyre.

Tyre Slip

Cars without anti-lock brakes will often experience the wheel locking up under heavy braking, which tend to be brought on in panic braking – a quick response to an emergency or situation where the driver heavily applies the brakes to avoid hitting something or someone.

This can leave tyres with flat spots, or in an ABS car, cause the driver to skid and lose control.
